Overflowing toilet: what to do first
An overflow feels urgent because it is. Clean water from a stuck fill valve and wastewater from a blocked trap are different problems, but the first moves are the same.
Turn the valve behind the toilet clockwise. If it spins without stopping the flow, shut the main water valve for the house instead.
Remove the tank lid and press the rubber flapper down over the drain hole. This stops more water from being sent into a full bowl.
Liquid drain openers can splash back and burn skin, and they make a later repair more hazardous for the plumber. A plunger or nothing at all is better.
Soak up water with towels, then photograph the floor, the walls and the base of the bowl. Insurance adjusters ask for them.
If a shower or sink nearby gurgles or backs up at the same time, the clog may be past the toilet, in the main drain. That is a different job, covered under sewer line cleaning, and the plumber will check for it before pulling the toilet.
Signs a toilet needs repair
Most toilet failures announce themselves weeks before they become a mess. Any of these is a reason to call before the next flush.
- Water trickles into the bowl a few minutes after the last flush
- The handle has to be held down for the tank to empty
- The bowl rocks when you sit on it or push it sideways
- A damp ring, stained flooring or soft vinyl around the base
- The flush swirls weakly and the bowl takes a long time to clear
- The tank refills on its own with a faint hiss when nobody has used it
- Water beads on the outside of the tank bolts or the supply line
- A gurgle in the bowl when a nearby sink or shower drains
A single symptom is often a ten minute fix. Two or three together usually mean the toilet has been neglected long enough that the floor beneath it needs a look as well.
Water still rising in the bowl? Close the valve behind it and call now.
Call (855) 575-2890Running toilet: the quiet water waster
A toilet that runs on has one of three problems. The flapper no longer seals, the fill valve will not shut off at the right level, or the chain between the handle and flapper is the wrong length. You can tell which one by dropping a few drops of food coloring in the tank and waiting fifteen minutes. If color shows up in the bowl, the flapper is leaking.
Water that runs into the overflow tube instead points to a float set too high. The fix is a quick adjustment or a new fill valve, and it costs far less than the water that slips away unnoticed.
Why flappers wear out
City of Tavares Utilities disinfects with chlorine, and its 2023 report gives a 0.6 ppm average. That is normal and safe to drink, but chlorinated water slowly stiffens and warps rubber parts in the tank, so a flapper that is a few years old can stop sealing. The same report does not list a hardness figure, so mineral crust on the fill valve is a matter of testing your tap rather than guessing.
Common toilet problems and the usual fix
| Problem | Likely cause | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Runs after flushing | Worn flapper or misadjusted float | Replace the flapper, adjust or replace the fill valve |
| Rocks on the floor | Loose closet bolts or a failed wax ring | Reset the toilet on a new ring and tighten the bolts evenly |
| Water around the base | Wax ring seal, cracked flange or a loose supply line | Pull the toilet, inspect the flange, reseal |
| Weak flush | Clogged rim jets or a partial blockage | Clear the jets, auger the trap, check the vent |
| Tank sweating or leaking | Failed tank-to-bowl gasket or bolt washers | Replace the gasket set |
| Cracked bowl or tank | Impact, age or a hard tighten-down | Replace the toilet |
These are general descriptions, not quotes. The plumber confirms the cause before touching a part.
Rocking toilets and the wax ring
A wax ring is a soft gasket that sits between the toilet outlet and the flange, the ring bolted to the floor. When the toilet moves, the seal breaks, and the first sign is often a faint smell or a stain on the ceiling below. Water from a failed ring seeps into the subfloor long before it shows on top.
We pull the toilet, scrape off the old wax, and check the flange for cracks, rust and height. A flange sitting below the finished floor needs a spacer or a repair ring, because a new wax ring on a bad flange fails again within months. Most Tavares homes are slab-on-grade, so this work usually means fixing the flange in concrete rather than a wood floor.
Clogs a plunger cannot clear
A closet auger, which is a short hand-cranked snake with a protected tip, reaches the curve of the trap without scratching the porcelain. Wipes, paper towels, toys and heavy paper cause most stubborn blockages. If the auger pulls out a toy or a mass of wipes, the cause is clear and the repair is done.
When the auger runs free but the bowl still drains badly, the problem sits further down. A blocked vent can slow a flush, and a clog in the branch line serves more than one fixture. At that point drain cleaning with a longer cable is the right tool, and a camera can show what is left.
When to replace instead of repair
A toilet with a hairline crack in the tank or bowl should be replaced, not patched. The same goes for one that needs a new fill valve, flapper and wax ring in the same year, since the repairs add up to most of the cost of a new unit. A new toilet also removes the mineral stains and slow leaks that older ones collect.
Before ordering, measure the rough-in, which is the distance from the wall to the center of the floor drain. Twelve inches is the most common, but older homes vary. If you are also adding or moving a bathroom, our plumbing installation work covers the supply and drain changes, and the plumber can haul out the old unit.
What toilet repair costs
A simple flapper swap and a full toilet replacement sit far apart on the bill. These are the details that decide where yours lands.
A flapper, fill valve or supply line is a small repair. A wax ring means pulling and resetting the whole toilet.
A cracked or low flange needs a repair ring or a new section before the toilet can be set again.
Soft flooring or a stained ceiling below means the leak has been active a while, and repair may come before the toilet goes back.
Bowl style, height, flush type and brand change the price of a replacement far more than the labor.
Nights and weekends can change the dispatch cost, and we say so before work starts.
Insurance often covers the water damage from a sudden overflow but may not pay for the toilet itself or for a slow leak that went on for months. Take photos and call your carrier before cleanup.
The fastest way to a real number is a call, because the price is explained before any work begins.
Toilet repair around Tavares
Tavares sits on a narrow strip between Lake Eustis and Lake Dora, and many homes close to the water have slab floors with a high water table beneath. A leaking wax ring there can leave the slab damp for a long time before the stain shows up, which is why we check the floor, not just the seal.
Older buildings near East Main Street may still have fixtures from the last remodel and shutoff valves that have not turned in years. Homes outside city sewer service run on septic systems, so ask City of Tavares Utilities which applies to your street if repeated overflows occur. We also serve Eustis, where older Victorian homes often have cast iron drains and original supply stops behind the wall.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. The dispatch line is staffed 24 hours a day, every day. Tell the dispatcher whether water is rising, leaking at the base or only running, close the valve behind the toilet, and a licensed plumber will be scheduled as soon as the day allows.
Lift the tank lid and check that the flapper seats fully and the chain has a little slack. If the water level sits above the overflow tube, lower the float. When neither helps, the flapper or fill valve is worn and should be replaced, which is a short repair.
The closet bolts are loose or the wax ring has failed. Do not just tighten the bolts hard, because porcelain cracks. The toilet should be lifted, the flange checked and a new ring set so the seal is rebuilt instead of squeezed.
We advise against it. Chemical openers can sit in the bowl, splash back on skin and eyes, and burn through some fittings. A plunger or a closet auger is safer and clears most single-toilet clogs without any chemical.
Often yes. Soft or spongy flooring, lifting vinyl and a stain on the ceiling below are warning signs. The plumber pulls the toilet, looks at the flange and surrounding area, and tells you what needs repair before the toilet goes back.
